The secret to perfect cut-offs? Sandpaper!
The only jeans I wanted to cut up were maternity jeans haha ;-).
Supplies:
- Jeans
- Scissors
- Needle and Thread
- 80 and 220 Grit Sandpaper
Cut your jeans. It's better to cut them too long than too short! Much easier to cut off a little more off than try to add some more on ...
Lay out your shorts so that the waist lays the way it would on your body - the front usually sits further down than the back.
Fold your shorts, front sides together. Snip the excess at the bottom so that the front isn't longer than the back:
Cut the threads up about 1 - 1 1/2 inches up the side seam.
Sew across the seam to keep it from unraveling further. Pull the unraveled side seams slightly inward, creating a small gap, and blind stitch down.
Round out the cut corners with a scissors.
Use sandpaper to distress as desired. I used 80 grit on areas to get down to the white threads. I also used 80 on the cut bottom to make the denim fringe out a little easier. I used 220 for slight distressing and to smooth out the areas where I used the 80 grit.
When you're sanding/distressing, make sure you have some kind of barrier between the front and back of the shorts - scrap wood works well.
Trim off the extra thread. Done!
