Craft Blog Basics: No Pin Code

The second installment of Craft Blog Basics! Go here for the first installment,"What are Linky Parties?".

(This is Callie the Pug. Yes, I know that she is not a human child. Try telling her that!)

A *slightly imperfect* way to keep specific pictures from getting pinned.

Have you noticed how I mention employing "No Pin" code on each Sunday Funday Feature? I learned this code from Jessi at Practically Functional (she is one of the hosts of Creativity Unleashed, a super fun Friday link party). Go to her site if you'd like to learn how to keep ALL your photos from being pinned.

I absolutely love it when people pin from my site. It gives me shivers of glee to know that someone liked a project enough to Pin it!

There are, however, certain pictures that I'd rather not have pinned from my site. Pics that I add no-pin code to:

1. My post script. Boring.

2. Pics I use with permission but don't belong to me. These include Sunday Funday feature pics. This way, readers will - hopefully - go to the featured site to Pin and anyone who clicks on the picture on their Pinterest board (hoping to find the tutorial) will go directly to the original creator's site.

This nifty No Pin code works when you have Pin-It buttons on the page or in your post. It does not work if:

1. Readers go through Pinterest and enter the http of your post in the Pinterest box.

2. You have Pin code that enables hovering Pinterest buttons on every photo. I couldn't make the code work with hovering buttons. Perhaps it's just me?

3. You're on a Blogger blog and haven't disabled the built-in social sharing buttons, shown below:

Even if you add the code, the built-in Pinterest button enables readers to pin the first picture in your post. The way around this without deleting the social sharing buttons? Add a random picture to the top! For instance, I have a header pic that I use specifically for Sunday Funday Features.

With the aforementioned caveats in mind, here is the No Pin code:

nopin= "no pin"

I had a spot of trouble implementing the code. This is how I ended up placing it:

1. Go to the HTML area in your post (next to the Compose button).

2. Find the code of the picture you want to add No Pin code to. The code for your picture should look like:

3. Place nopin= "no pin" between the height and width values (highlighted in red). Make sure to leave a space before and after the code:

a href="http://PICTURE.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://PICTURE.jpg" height="72" nopin= "nopin" width="320" /></a></div>
So . . . that's how I keep other bloggers' work from being pinned from this blog. This ups the odds that readers will pin directly from the originating site!

What methods do you employ? Do you allow pinning? Do you have "no pin" code that works with hovering Pinterest icons? Please share with the class! :-)
